The Challenge
A logistics company with a fleet of 200 lorries needed an on-board computer for monitoring fuel, GPS position and driver behaviour. Standard solutions failed:
Laptops and tablets break
Standard devices failed after a month of operation due to constant vibrations from the engine and road surface irregularities.
Power surges on ignition
When turning the ignition key, the voltage spikes from 12V to 24V+ and then drops sharply. Ordinary computers would shut down or sustain damage.
Extreme temperatures
The cab can reach +70°C in the sun during summer and -30°C in the car park during winter. Ordinary batteries would swell.
Lack of constant connectivity
The lorries travel across Europe. Reliable 4G connectivity is required for real-time telemetry and GPS tracking.
The IWILL Solution
We integrated a NANO/IBOX Vehicle PC solution with modifications specifically for the transport sector, based on our Edge & IoT products:
Ignition Control
The computer powers on automatically when the ignition key is turned and shuts down with a configurable delay after the engine stops. This delay allows the final telemetry data to be transmitted without draining the lorry battery.
Vibration and shock resistance
Passive cooling and soldered components – no spinning discs, no loosening connectors. The construction is tested to MIL-STD-810G standards for shock and vibration, ensuring reliability over thousands of miles on rough roads.
4G LTE + GPS module
Built-in M.2 B-Key slot for a 4G/5G module with SIM card for real-time connection to the dispatch centre, even when the lorry is in transit across Europe. The GPS module provides accurate position, speed and route data.
Wide-range power input
Support for 9-36V DC input, covering both 12V (cars) and 24V (lorries and coaches) on-board power systems. Built-in protection against reverse polarity, power surges and over-voltage on ignition.
Result
Full control of the 200-lorry fleet through a unified dispatch centre. Dramatic reduction in fuel costs through monitoring of driver behaviour (harsh braking, idling). The hardware has lasted over 5 years in the lorry cab without a single failure.
